Replacement of asbestos roof
The main school building at the Shaw Park Combined School houses multiple classrooms and all administrative offices. The 35-year-old roof is made of corrugated asbestos-cement sheeting and has leaks that affect some classrooms, as well as areas of black mold identified by AMANZI’s roofing contractor. Asbestos and black mold pose significant health risks to students, teachers, and administrators.
In keeping with AMANZI’s commitment to climate-resilient, environmentally responsible solutions, the roof will be removed and disposed of by a certified asbestos-removal contractor using appropriate safety protocols and environmentally responsible disposal methods.

Rainwater harvesting system
To ensure long-term water security for Shaw Park Combined School, AMANZI plans to install a comprehensive rainwater harvesting system across all school buildings. The harvested water will provide a reliable source for drinking, handwashing, and the preparation and cleanup of approximately 400 meals served to learners each day.
The main school building is the largest structure on the school property, making its roof a critical component of the rainwater harvesting system. Capturing water from this roof will be essential to meeting the school’s ongoing water needs. Replacing the existing asbestos roof is therefore a critical prerequisite to establishing a safe, reliable, and sustainable water supply for the school.

Renovation of school kitchen
The Shaw Park Combined School’s kitchen will be renovated to include running water, supporting the preparation of more than 400 meals each day for learners, as well as exterior plumbing to facilitate cleaning and sanitation. The system will also include a three-stage carbon filtration system with UV purification, providing safe, purified drinking water for students and teachers throughout the school day.

Conversion to low-flow toilets
The existing toilet blocks at Shaw Park Combined School are in good structural condition, but the toilets themselves are in poor repair and rely on large cisterns that use significant amounts of water with each flush. As part of the project, AMANZI will replace the existing toilets with low-flow fixtures that use substantially less water per flush, helping to conserve the school’s water supply. AMANZI will also renovate the interiors of the toilet blocks, improving their cleanliness, functionality, and overall environment for learners and staff.
